What Is a Fire Suppression System?

A fire suppression system detects a fire and releases an extinguishing agent into the protected space automatically. Unlike a sprinkler, most suppression systems use gas or chemical agents rather than water, so equipment, stock and records survive the event. The right system depends on what is in the room and who is in it.

Clean-agent gas

FM-200, Novec 1230 and Inergen flood a sealed room with a gas that puts the fire out and leaves no residue. Nothing to wipe off a server, a switchboard or an archive. Specified where the contents of the room are worth more than the room.

High-pressure CO2

Carbon dioxide smothers a fire by displacing oxygen. That makes it effective on sealed plant, and dangerous to anyone inside. C4 reserves CO2 strictly for enclosures that people do not occupy, such as generator rooms and paint stores.

Wet chemical

A potassium-based agent discharged into a commercial kitchen hood, duct and fryer line. It cools the oil and forms a soap layer across the surface so the fire cannot reignite. Serviced on the same visit as the portable equipment.

Condensed aerosol

A solid compound converts to a fine potassium aerosol that interrupts the flame chemistry. Useful in compact enclosures, cabinets and remote plant where there is no room for a cylinder bank. C4 can specify and advise on condensed aerosol where it suits the enclosure.

Room Integrity Testing

A gas suppression system only works if the room can hold the agent long enough to put the fire out. A door-fan room-integrity test pressurises the room, measures leakage and calculates how long the agent will stay at design concentration. C4 performs the test at commissioning and repeats it after any structural change.

Room integrity testing is the step most often skipped and the one that decides whether a suppression system performs. C4 Fire & Security runs a door-fan test at commissioning: a calibrated fan is mounted in the doorway, the room is pressurised and depressurised, and the leakage area is measured to calculate the agent hold time against the SANS 14520 design requirement. Rooms fail for ordinary reasons, such as cable penetrations, unsealed ceiling voids, damper leakage or a door that no longer closes on its seal. Where a room fails, C4 identifies the leakage paths, seals them and retests rather than oversizing the cylinder bank. The test is repeated after any structural change, after a discharge, and on the annual service visit, and the result is recorded in the logbook alongside the certificate of service.

    Seal and mount

    The protected room is closed as it would be on discharge. A calibrated fan is mounted in the doorway on a temporary panel, and the room is prepared exactly as the suppression system expects to find it.

    Pressurise and measure

    The fan pressurises and then depressurises the room while the instrument records airflow against pressure difference. That relationship gives the total equivalent leakage area of the enclosure.

    Calculate hold time

    The leakage area is converted into a predicted hold time: how long the agent stays at design concentration before it drains away. The result is compared against the SANS 14520 requirement for the room.

    Seal, retest, record

    Where a room fails, C4 traces the leakage paths, seals them and retests rather than oversizing the cylinder bank. The final result is recorded in the logbook alongside the certificate of service.

Detection

Detection Is What Triggers Suppression

Suppression does not act on its own. A cross-zoned detection system confirms a real fire on two independent detectors before the panel arms the discharge, which is what prevents an accidental release. C4 designs the detection and the suppression together so the two are commissioned as one certified system.

Cross-zoning is the reason a suppression system does not empty its cylinder bank because a kettle boiled over. The panel waits for a second, independent detector on a different zone to confirm the first before it starts the countdown, sounds the pre-discharge alarm and arms the release. An abort station gives a person in the room the ability to hold the discharge while they investigate. Because C4 designs the detection and the suppression as one system, the zoning, the panel logic, the warning devices and the agent bank are commissioned and certified together rather than handed between two contractors. What is the difference between fire suppression and a sprinkler system?

Is fire suppression safe for people in the room?

Inergen and Novec 1230 are designed for occupied spaces and remain safe at design concentration, and a pre-discharge alarm gives occupants time to leave.
