Clean Suppression for High-Value Spaces
Inergen (IG-541) uses naturally occurring gases to suppress fires with zero environmental impact. Ideal for large data centres, archives and telecommunications facilities. C4 Fire & Security designs and installs Inergen systems across the Western Cape.
Zero Environmental Impact
Inergen is a blend of nitrogen, argon and CO2. Zero ozone depletion, zero global warming potential. The greenest suppression option.
Large Area Coverage
Inergen excels in large enclosed spaces where chemical agents would be impractical or prohibitively expensive.
Breathable Atmosphere
Inergen reduces oxygen to a level that cannot sustain combustion while remaining breathable for safe evacuation.
Inergen (IG-541) Suppression Systems
Inergen suppresses fire by reducing the oxygen concentration in the protected space from 21% to approximately 12.5%, a level that cannot sustain combustion but remains breathable for building occupants during evacuation. It is composed entirely of gases naturally present in the atmosphere: 52% nitrogen, 40% argon and 8% CO2.

How It Works
Space Assessment
We measure the protected volume, assess structural integrity and calculate the required agent quantity.
System Design
Engineers design cylinder banks, pipe network and nozzle placement for uniform distribution.
Installation
Professional installation of high-pressure cylinder banks, distribution piping and release systems.
Integrity & Commission
Room integrity test, full discharge simulation and compliance certification.
Tap a card for the Inergen detail
Inergen (IG-541) is the inert-gas alternative to FM-200 for the largest protected spaces. Tap any card for the detail.
-
IG-541 mix
Three inert gases blended to suppress fire while staying safe to breathe.
- Nitrogen 52 percent
- Argon 40 percent
- Carbon dioxide 8 percent
- No hydrofluorocarbons, no decomposition products
- Zero GWP and zero ODP
-
Inert-gas safety
Safe for occupied spaces because the oxygen drop is shallow and brief.
- Oxygen reduced to ~12.5 percent (still breathable for short evac)
- Carbon dioxide trace raises respiration rate (more oxygen uptake)
- Pre-discharge alarm and 30-second time delay
- Evacuation drill required during commissioning
- No visibility loss (clear gas)
-
Cylinder bank sizing
Inergen needs more cylinders than FM-200 for the same protected volume.
- Design concentration around 38 percent by volume
- Stored at 200 or 300 bar
- Manifold of 4 to 32 cylinders typical for commercial
- Modular bank for redundancy and ease of refilling
- Cylinder bank usually in a dedicated cylinder room
-
Discharge time
60-second discharge (SANS 14520 allows 60 seconds for inert gases).
- Longer than FM-200's 10-second discharge
- Lower nozzle pressure protects sensitive equipment
- Reduced pressure-relief venting requirement
- Pre-discharge alarm and 30-second time delay
- Automatic HVAC and door shutdown on activation
-
Best-fit applications
Inergen wins on the largest protected spaces and the lowest environmental impact briefs.
- Large data centres and telco exchanges
- Heritage buildings and museums
- Pharmaceutical clean rooms
- Where regulators require zero chemical agents
- Sites where cylinder room real estate is available

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Inergen reduces oxygen to approximately 12.5%, which suppresses fire but remains breathable. The CO2 component actually stimulates breathing, helping occupants evacuate safely. It is one of the safest suppression agents for occupied spaces.
Choose Inergen when environmental impact is a priority, when protecting very large spaces (where chemical agents become expensive), or when you want a suppression agent with unlimited shelf life. FM200 is typically more cost-effective for smaller rooms.
Inergen is stored as compressed gas at 200 or 300 bar, requiring more cylinder storage than chemical agents. We design the cylinder bank location during the planning phase to minimise the footprint while maintaining accessibility for maintenance.
